Enyt's Blog

I started to write this blog in 2002 when I was still living in Osaka. This blog is more about my life abroad, my past and my present.

Name:
Location: New York, New York, United States

November is my fav month. I was born in Indonesia 28 years ago and currently living in New York. In the city of no close friends, i spend most of my leisure time at the gym and bookstores and yet i am neither muscular nor a nerd..: ) I take life as it is, i try to get as much as from life experiences while i am still young. I've been given a lot of opportunities to spend my life abroad, my inside curiosity is like a three years old kid. Give me the world, i'll give you my heart. :P

Languages, Mt. Rokko, Mt. Maya and Moving

Last Friday I was helping one of my sensei teaching English to one girl from China. Some of the japanese people know English vocabs, but usually they can't speak it (and if they speak, it's a "Japanese' English", which means only japanese people can understand each other). My sensei is okay with the vocabs but when it comes to grammar, he's got problem. So, he asked my help after class on that day to teach english ( this is for entrance to the univ here). Another problem was this girl has never learned english before, so when it came to the reading comprehensive, she's completely in trouble. My job was explaining the meanings and because of the time limitation, we didn't talk about the grammar at all.

In other hand, I am happy that I can speak English even though I can't say that my english is 100% correct. It's just that among the languages, I like English best. Next is Chinese, and I promised myself I 'll try to learn whether French or German when I get back. I don't remember when was the first time I could speak English without any pause, but I think the best way to learn one language is to speak, read and listen.
There were times when people asked me whether I can speak better English or Chinese, I don't know even the answer. I started learning Chinese when I was around 13 year old until I was in the first or second year of univ. So I can say I have learned Chinese more or less for 10 years. For this, I really thank my parents that made us learn it, and it's very useful in these days.
As for English, I spent more times learning at home, reading books and watching tv or movies. I hardly attended the English courses or something like that ( the one that I attended before was only 5 weeks, that was the time I thought I might go to Australia for a further study )
And now I am learning Japanese, never ever crossed in my mind before that I would come to Japan and learn Japanese. It's just happened ! But of course, I am feeling lucky that at least now I can say I understand more than the basic conversation. Two things I really don't like about Japanese are Katakana ( the Japanese' English ) and the Keigo ( the very polite form of speaking to elderly, bosses, customers, etc) I hate these ! I just don't like to memorize them ( but anyway, I have to learn it, I will need them if I want to work in a Japanese company )

Finally, I have visited the famous Mt Rokko in Kobe last saturday. Hmm, but how to say, I wasn't really satisfied with this trip as it wasn't as good as I thought. Mt. Maya is just the same, not so interesting to me. Perhaps the most interesting part was taking the cable car and ropeway to both of the mountains. I guessed I missed the flowers seasons there and some people said that they look better in winter. Hmm...

So, I moved this morning. Tiring enough. Only Ken was helping me, and it was a really hard work to move the refrigerator and the washing machine, so heavy that I felt like dying. Hah ! But of course now all has over, I just need to unpack things when I get back home. ^.^

One interesting thing was the woman who lived next to me ( the woman who takes care the whole building, the kanri jin, she's called ) was so happy that I moved out already. Actually not long ago, she came to my room and said that I was too noisy when walking in the room !! Isn't it crazy? I didn't walk noisily, it's just she's too sensitive. And if I did something late at nights, she would knock on my door and complained. I felt like I couldn't even do anything freely in my own room, not even walking normaly !
Anyway, this morning she came again and she smiled happily and said sayonara to me. Weirdo !

I missed the Tensin Matsuri (festival), it's a pity but I had to work both on 24th and 25th. Sigh. Tensin Matsuri is one of the biggest festival in Japan. This is the day where numbers of decorated boats passing across the river, followed by the fireworks. I saw there were many young people wearing "yugata", the so-called Japanese summer kimono. It's really nice, you know. Guess what, I felt like wearing one but it's a very very expensive traditional custom.

Meanwhile, I feel so ashamed of myself that I always went to school late this week. Well, it's has been more than 10 months I didn't wake up early in the morning ( hehee...lazy ) and now because of the summer classes, I have to wake up at 7.30am ( ya ya, it's not so early in the morning, I am just too lazy !! )
But the classes are great so far, I like it, and I am feeling like I am using my time to the utmost. Haha...: ) I guess that I deserve to get a "good student" predicate. ^.^

Summer Classes, Balm Crickets and Next Trip : Nagano

Aaaaa...today is the second day of my summer classes. It's okay so far, I think Iam learning more but one thing is it's really really hard for me to wake up at 7.30 in the morning. Hehe..lazy worm ! Really. I used to wake up around 10am because I usually go to bed late, around 2am or 3am, so right now I really lack of sleep. Sigh. I guess I should change a bit. Hah !

Summer becomes crazier than ever, hotter and hotter, not to mention, every morning, you're disturbed by the sounds of balm crickets coming from the trees, it's so noisy !!!!! Summer in Japan is 100% different with I usually had in Indonesia. Sigh.

Anyway, good news is next month on the 2nd, I will be going to Nagano, yeahhhhh !! This time, I will have time to take a bit of hiking and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains around. I always wanted to go to Nagano and this summer the dream will be coming true. ^.^

Recently, the passion for writing suddenly appeared again in my mind. It's such a long time since the last time I made a story. I know what I want to write about but I still can't find a way to start the beginning which is the most difficult one. I guess I will try to write one after I return to Jakarta, maybe at that time, it'd be easier for me. Hah!

I am backkkk !!! The Nose's trip was good. It's about 2 hours from Osaka city, taking trains and bus, a bit of tired, but the natural beauty was worth to see...: ) Only the Koreans and Chinese were going ( of course including one Indonesian, me ). Dinner was BBQ and beers ( still, I tried not to drink any beer that has a alcohol rate higher than 1%, hehe ). After dinner, every body went to the playground and played sports. OH my God, it has been such a long time I didn't play basketball, volleyball and badminton, and I was surprised I still could play them !! Yeahh ! But now my whole body is hurt, I think I should start doing some excercises from now on. Hah !

The place we lived is called "Honkan", a wood house that has a swimming pool, soccer ground, and of course the playground. It's a nice place, I really like the architecture inside. Too bad the weather wasn't too good, we couldn't do the hiking, and this afternoon, after lunch, we headed back to Osaka.

Gion Festival, Nose's Trip and Summer's classes

Yesterday's morning, I went to Kyoto for Gion Festival, it's one of the three biggest summer festival in Japan. Woke up early in the morning, and then set to Kyoto, arrived there exactly at 9 am. It was raining lightly but still people were crowding around. The Gion festival has 31 of decorated kinda cars ( not cars, i don't know how to explain ), the festival was great and it was a worth to see ! ^.^
The other big festival will be in Osaka this 24th and 25th, but I am not sure I'd be able to see them as I will have to work both on those days...: ( I don't want to miss it since I am already here in Japan, let's see later..

My summer vacation has begin ( from today !) and this afternoon at 1pm, I will be going to Nose for hiking ( will be back tomorrow, it's only one night's trip). It sounds fun to me now ( I was reluctant to go in the beginning but now I guess I need refreshing ).

Aaaa, I am glad that my headmaster allows me to take summer classes. Wow!!! that means I still can learn more Japanese in my holiday ! Yeah, anyway, I won't have works in the morning, so this is really a great opportunity !

In The Search of The Real Mango, Typhoon and Languages

So you know from the title what I am going to say. Just recently, my passion for tropical fruit has increased. I really want to eat mango ( and you just know how much the mango here, so I just can't buy the fruit). Anyway, I have tried mango ice cream, mango citrus frappucino and even mango shake. Hmm, how to say, they're all artificial. Skip the ice cream ( it has no taste of mango at all), the frappucino was also disappointing, and the shake was too sweat. Overall, I am not satified yet. Hah!

Finally, I had to change the template of this site. A few days ago I had the problems with the template and couldn't publish my journals. So, I changed it and I think I like this new one. ^.^

Meanwhile, the typhoon is coming to all over of Japan. Yesterday, it just "passed" Osaka and nothing horrible happened. But at the noon time, it had one short incredible heavy rain and heavy winds. It just reminded me of the typhoon I had in Xiamen 3 years ago. It was much much more horrible !!! Anyway, I hope this typhoon will go away soon, afterall, it already did some damages here and there.

Just recently there're just too many of tourists coming to ramen ya san, especially those coming from Taiwan and Hongkong (previously when world cup was held here, some Koreans were coming too ). Hmm, I actually don't like Hongkong people that much, I mean they're noisy, not to mention that those came here only speak Cantonese ( and if those that could speak Chinese, it's a weird Chinese ). Do I sound harsh ? Well, this is only my personal opinion. ^.^

Talking about languages, if I have chances, I'd like to be able to speak 7 languages. Really, but it seems impossible at this moment. Here, from Monday to Saturday, I can learn 6 languages from the tv ( but of course you can't expect to be able to speak just learning from the tv ) but I like when they teach French and German ( now I am learning a bit, infact I want to learn more. I'd probably get myself some good books but I don't have anyone here to correct my pronounciations, that holds me back a bit )

School is almost finished. Just another three days, I will have my long summer vacation. Somehow, I don't wish to have such a long break, I'd better stay at school and learn more about Japanese. Well, what to say..I will have to wait until September when school will begin again.

Did I ever tell you that I like unagi very much ? in English, it's called eel. Well, yesterday, another lunch with Satoko at the famous Unagi restaurant. It's really really delicious !!! But the prices weren't that nice, it's expensive ( actually, unagi is one of the expensive food here). Anyway, it's a perfect satisfaction. Hah !

Hmm, soon I will move to Ken's apartment. First reason is to save some money and he's real nice to offer me his place. To tell the truth, I hate moving, i've got a headache just thinking about it. But I am sure we will have more great times. Yeah !

Last night, to conquer my allergic to alcohol, I finally brought myself one can of "Brewry" beer. Okay, so it has only 0.95% of alcohol, not high at all, but I wanted to know whether I'd get itchy if I drink it. Well, not at all ! Hah, I personally don't like beer at all, but just once in your life, you want to try something that you don't like. Know what I mean?

Thursday, July 11, 2002

I have just discovered that I can't live without one thing here. I am addicted to caffein !!! It's has become a habit that every morning, I will myself a cup of thick coffee and I realized that everytime I didn't have a morning coffee, I'd get a headache and had no spirit of doing anything. Oh my God ! It's really not a good habit, and I really don't want to get more and more addicted to it. Sigh.

Yesterday, I had another interview for another work. Somehow I didn't feel nervous at all. Infact, I felt at ease. A few months ago, I'd feel nervously inside, but now I feel more confidence. ^.^ I think this is perhaps I am getting better in my Japanese. Yeah !! I am so glad to realize that. Hah!

Welcome to the humid and hot weather of Japan ! It's true. Really, I am not used to it, I mean even in Indonesia where the hot weather is all around the year, but at least we still have winds and of course air-con almost all the time. But here, just thinking of how much I have to pay for my electricity bill, I try to save as much as possible. Sigh. The worst is the ramen ya san is real hot, sweating all the time, really really uncomfortable ! I am wondering how could I survive the august. : (

I don't cook anymore. And if I cook, it's only curry, fried rice or fried noodles. All less than 5 minutes cooking. Months ago, I thought I have discovered the inner of a woman which is cooking. But, since I live on my own, I am too lazy to cook while Ken loves cooking so much ! And his cooking is always colorful and tasteful. I already promised him to cook one great menu before going back. Sigh. I really have no idea what to cook and not to mention how to cook.
Btw, I think I am a good coffee maker. Every morning, after getting up, the first thing to do is make a cup of hot coffee ( it should be a hot coffee no matter how hot the weather is, but when I buy outside, it should be a cold one, confused?). Here is my recipe :
1. Boil one cup of hot water.
2. Add 4,5 tea spoon of coffee.
3. Add 1.5 tea spoon of coffee cream.
4. Add 1.5 tea spoon of sugar.
5. Stir and drink.
That's simple but really great ! Trust me.

I skipped class today, too lazy to go. Instead, I went to Nanba and Shinsaibashi for window shopping. Okay, so it's big sales here, well, of course you can't expect a low price in Japan, but at least I saw some items which I can afford. Hah ! I mean this is a good time hunting for souvenirs for my family. I am thinking to buy shoes and bags for my sisters and mom, but you know what, all of the items I like range from 10.000yen to 15.000yen ! Anyway, let's see if I have enough money, I am going to buy them. Hah!

Oh, I had incredibly quantities of sushi yesterday. Satoko and I had a dinner at kaiten sushi, and we had 26plates which total is 52pieces. I guess that I had around 30pieces! Okay, so I really like sushi, I don't eat often here, it's just one of the excitement of eating out. Haha...

Do you believe that when you're away from the people that you actually love but you don't realize it then you become closer than ever? I am talking about my relationships with my family. Well, we seem to be closer than ever, of course that we don't say words like " I miss you" or something like that, I guess that we actually know it by hearts. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard from my big sis that my second sis is going to give me some money because I told her how broke I am ( but of course I didn't ask for money, I can survive here) It' sounds so surprising to me as my second sister is well known as the miser in my family. Haha... But really, I do miss them and I just want all of us living together again. I miss my dad most, but he's gone for almost 2 years. Sometimes I heard from some people that how much they don't like their parents or just want to get away from them for freedom. I just don't understand, if I were given a chance, I would choose staying longer with my parents. Really. You'll know what I said when the people you love have gone.

Final Game and Ume Sake

I watched the highlight of the final last night and ( I already expected so ) Brazil won. Well, I was a bit sad but I must admit that Ronaldo was a great player even though I believed that the German team already tried their best especially Kahn as the captain and goalkeeper. Anyway, now the game has over, and let's wait for the next one four years later.

Today, I had lunch with Satoko at one exclusive yakiniku-steak restaurant. It's yummy and we also had the "ume sake", it's sweet and delicious ( I usually don't drink sake or beer, but this one is okay ). Anyway, it's a delicious lunch !

Tomorrow she is going to Canada for 1 week and on this middle of the month, she's going to Xiamen again. When she's here, we met a lot and talked a lot. I can say that she is like the second family to me. She's a nice person and actually not like a Japanese ( well, at least to me).
